The First Harry Potter Book

My son reads for about 20-30 minutes everyday after school.  He’s entering the fourth grade this fall and as a third grader he read a lot of books.  Most of them were of the 100-200 page variety, and he’s just getting to the point where he’s ready for a full on novel.

So when he came home from school the other day and was ‘out of books to read’ we pulled the first harry potter book of the shelf.  Now, he’s seen all the movies that have come out so far and he’s listened to several of the books when he was in 2nd and 3rd grade while we were on long Christmas road trips.

This will probably be one of the longest books he has read, once he completes it.  It will be some kind of milestone.

The first novel I read was Little House on the Prairie.  I still remember reading that book, but reading was not emphasized in school half as much then as it is now.  I kind of came into being a bookworm at my own pace.  I’m hoping that my son will be a book worm too, but I have a suspicion that the the super heavy emphasis on reading by schools will burn kids out a bit and they might rebel away from reading.

It seems like just yesterday (or maybe a week ago) he was still learning to read and struggling a bit.  We’d read stories to him in bed with animal print bedding with the same characters on the sheets that were in the books sometimes.   For me reading is what I do best.  I enjoy writing as well but not as much as reading.  I sometimes wonder if my son might be the opposite, more of a writer than a reader.

Either way that will be fine with me . . .  :)

One Response to The First Harry Potter Book

I hope your son continues to love reading! My son is now a sophomore in high school, and he reads constantly. Every once in a while, he is ‘out of books to read’ too. Considering the piles of books he brings home from the library, I find that hard to believe, but he reads fast.

I really don’t think that the emphasis on reading in school makes a huge difference in whether kids continue to read or not. Either they love to read or they don’t. My kids went through the same school. My daughter, who’s a junior, ‘hates’ to read, and my son loves to. I don’t know what the difference is. She has read all of the Harry Potter books, though – so she can read if she has to, or if she’s really interested. Her 3rd grade class read the first Harry Potter book together, and that was the first book she had shown any interest in for a long time. She even took time out from roller blading, which she loves to do, to read! I’m guessing your son will really enjoy it.
