What to do with All my Old Blogger Blogs? Created New Templates –> Maybe some Adsense Content too…
Years ago, I created a LOT of Blogger blogs. Some of you may recall
that this particular site started out as a blogger blog too.
When I first set them up, I was basically just looking for an html playground to fool around and learn more about web design.
Then I started learning a great deal about blogging with them.
Before you know it, I had graduated to CMS based sites powered by WordPress and all of a sudden I found myself with all of these old Blogger blogs under my account.
Most of them are languishing, but they do prove useful from time to time when I need to use a shot gun approach to the long tail that still remains.
Well tonight, I took a very small first step in doing something with those old sites.
I started by doing what I always like to do best, Learn Something New.
This time, I was learning how to design Blogger Templates (like a wordpress theme) using my preferred design software, Artisteer. (If you want a 5% discount on it, follow me on twitter @brettbum and shoot me an @message and I will send you a code for a discount, which can save you about $5 – $10 off of a license.
Anyway, I started making Blogger Templates and updating 2-3 of the blogs that are still loaded up with content. (Some of the content I just deleted or consolidated into other sites, like this one.)
It was kind of fun.
Now, I’m even thinking about quickly creating unique blogger templates for all of my old Blogger Bogs and maybe refreshing some of the content there for a simple, basic adsense play. Nothing grand, but if it buys me a free dinner once a year and continues to enable me to blast the long tail shotgun from time to time too, well that’s just icing on the cake.
Just a quick note, I took some screen video of the process making these templates which I will share soon.
WordCamp Birmingham 2009 – Great Times
It is Tuesday, two days after WordCamp Birmingham and I am finally getting back to myself. Last week was a marathon of hard work, sleep deprivation and good times. Well the good times were all saved up at the end with WordCamp.
This was my second year at WordCamp in Bimingham and my good friend Andre Natta did a bang up job putting on a terrific show. You may recall that Andre and I went to New York City for Affiliate Summit back in August. This was also my second time presenting. This year I taught a great little session teaching people how to make their first wordpress theme and I have to thank everyone for the great feedback I received afterwards. Definitely made my weekend to hear that I had helped a lot of people!
This time, I was the one driving to Birmingham instead of Andre driving to Charlotte. While I was there I saw a lot of my friends from past southeastern social media events such as BarCamp Chattanooga and WordCamp Birmingham 2008. The Memphis contingent was present and stronger than ever.
This year in addition to @dougal the Atlanta contingent came out in force as well. Plus, they had good news to report as they will be putting on a WordCamp in Atlanta this January (I think its slated for January 15 – 16th. That’s right before Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas, so I might really have my hands full if I try to make both shows, which I would like to do.)
I met a lot of new friends as well and if I get five minutes to breathe as I recover, I’m going to come back to this post and add a long list of names, but I don’t get much of a breather because I’m leaving for IzeaFest tomorrow, packing up the whole family and driving to Orlando for a 4 day show at SeaWorld where I’ll be moderating a panel on What Advertisers Want.

So as usually, I’m likely to be a little behind on things for a few more days. But stop back soon, because I have another cool announcement to make about Blogworld.
Here’s some articles from some great people I met this weekend
- WordCamp Birmingham – The First of Several
- Yikes!! Overkill! – WordCamp Birmingham
- WordCamp Birmingham 2009 is a Success
- BuckDaddy who’s running wild through IzeaFest and BlogWorld and even more events than I am this month!
- WordCamp Birmingham Favorite Moment # 5
And then some cool people that I met also (the people with the articles were cool too, just not double listing to avoid redundancy)
- Mike Schinkel
- Kira Fonteneau
- Andrew Jones (I’m not sure if I actually met Andrew, no official introduction, but the second day of WordCamp was at ShiftWorkSpace which I think Andrew runs.
- Todd McCalla who runs Cool Springs, a great site for Cool Springs Tennessee that uses one of my favorite StudioPress themes.
- @The_Jerri_Ann who spoke at wordcamp on migrating a site to WordPress, but I found that she’s also a master at marketing her blog publications to large corporations. She’s doing some pretty amazing things. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit to learn that she has become a talent agent or professional publicist promoting bloggers 5 years from now.

New Years Preparation – Cleaning Up the Project that Would Never Finish
The end of the year is coming up quickly, and I’m hoping to clear up some old projects to make a clean break going into the new year. Last spring, I picked up a customer and started a project with them. The customer had a technical point of contact that I was supposed to work with. That was atypical, normally I do this particular type of work directly in what ever system I’m working on.
In this case, I had to do some work (web design, reboot a site, and a little SEO work). The site was not simple html, which meant that I had to have database access to actually test it completely. Now, long story short, I never got that access, never got access to a test server either.
So I had to do a lot of the design in a blind kind of fashion without being able to test it. (less than ideal by a long shot).
I am supposed to send the files to the technical contact, who will then plug them into the site and find out if they work or not, send me back something to then troubleshoot any last little bugs, which I then would have to correct and send back again.
Well, long story short, the technical contact disappeared. I don’t know if he took another job, contract or if some how we have just been missing each other.
So the back and forth stopped on the project, I was waiting for something back several months ago, and before you know it, actually you do know it because I just dropped the hint, several months had gone by and the project had officially stalled.
Now, the thing is I had the project 95% done. I just had a couple little questions about direction on a visible graphic or something.
So I have this project mostly done, but have no way to deliver it basically, not to mention put the last 5% of polish on it.
Now, the new year is coming and I want to wrap this project up in a nice pretty bow and put it behind me. So yesterday, I dug into it. Picked up the pieces and started to organize it for delivery to my non-technical client so that my client can try and do something useful with it regardless of whether they have a replacement technical contact or not.
Here’s the thing. (What thing? Why do people always talk about ‘the thing’ and why is it important to know where the thing is?)
One of the small elements of this project (then) was to create a blog where the clients email newsletter could be published. Headlines would also then be ‘fed’ over to the main site so that people checking in to the main site, could see the latest updates as they needed to.
As part of the project, I was to setup this blog and upload a dozen or so of the newsletters, and the client would then take it from there once the site was live. Well, since this thing has been stalled, the newsletters have been coming out almost every day for months.
Now by the deal we had, I could just turn it over to them with the blog from way back when, but I have a feeling that if I do that they’ll probably give up on the blog all together. So to help move things along and make it easier for the client to pick up the pieces on this stalled project, I spent most of the night last night, uploading every single news letter onto the blog. I worked my way from April all the way through the end of October. (still have November and December to do).
So today (after I finish writing this article) I’m going to get the rest of these loaded up and hopefully turn this over to my client on Monday, zipped up in a nice big package, ready for unzip and upload to their site. I hate it when projects get stalled out, but it does happen from time to time. I’ve got a lot of very different projects kicking off in the new year, and really want to clear out all the 08 projects so that I can get on track with the new stuff.
So there you have it!
