Internet Tools

I hate booking flights, trips, hotels etc

Websites that suck (and time sucked 5 hours out of me tonight) Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz, travelocity, cheaptickets.  I tried to book a trip for total price of $522 roundtrip plus 2 nights at the hilton.  No luck, every time I tried to book it and check out it kept telling me that the trip wasn’t available because the airline prices had changed.  I watched it change up and down for hours as I kept hitting ‘book it’ It just wouldn’t work, I felt like Happy Gilmore yelling at a golf ball as I yelled at my computer ‘Just book it already! Don’t you want to book it?’  Finally ended up booking a flight to a completely different airport (Ontario California) instead of Burbank-Bob Hope which I prefer or LAX which I tolerate when I have to.  So I have a flight, will be on the right(correct) coast, and will have to drive an extra 5-20 miles depending on if you are measuring from Burbank or LAX.  Now I get to relax, pick up my scratched out eyeballs off the floor and see if I can jam them back into place so that I can then glue my pulled out hair back on my head.  [bitching and moaning session completed]

ATT UVerse Online Tech Support SUCKS!

Just need to take a moment to vent my frustration with ATT Uverse.  In particular, its online tech support and on the side its internet service.

image

  • ATT Uverse online technical support sucks – it literally routes you to att wireless tech support which as you might guess, can do NOTHING to help you with a att Uverse problem
  • Att Uverse internet is slow/down more than its up.  Cable and phone service is normally reliable although as I write this, our entire service has been down for 4 hours and counting.  I also have a time warner cable account just for internet, and I use it 90% of the time because it is far more reliable than ATT Uverse internet.  Speeds are about the same, I would have considered consolidating entirely into ATT Uverse, but I can’t trust it.

One of the extra sucky things about ATT uverse is that when its down, out, whatever, you have no phone, no internet, no tv, you can’t even watch shows recorded on your att uverse DVR!

What a cool last minute find in LinkedIn!  Might have to hang on LinkedIn more often, just to find events like this.  I’ve been wondering how useful LinkedIn might still be for me, and having some doubts until I found this.

Buying a Dead Kitten Online? – Shop Around for a Good Price

image Today, I finally got around to buying a dead kitten.  I’ve been meaning to get something like this for several months now for my Rode Procaster microphone.  The thing is, that this is a relatively new microphone and no one really talks about the accessories that will work with it or fit it when it comes to wind screens.

So I called up Rode today and asked.  Yeah, I could have done that months ago, but I’m not the type to stop and ask for directions either.  (personality flaw that I’m aware of and ignoring)

They told me that the WS2 would fit just fine.  I mentioned that my studio is sometimes set up outside and I’d like a furry wind screen option as well.  They have a Dead Cat windscreen that is about 6 inches deep apparently.  That sounded good, but more over kill aimed at video microphones.  They also offered the Dead Kitten wind screen which is supposed to be about 3 inches deep.

So I then searched around for prices.  I found the Dead Kitten on Amazon for $45 and the foam wind screens there for $15.  Seemed a little on the high side for my meager budget of $0.  So I then looked around some more.  The best price I could find on Dead Kittens was at Sweetwater (where I bought the microphone).  It was only $24.99 there (twenty bucks less than the best price on Amazon).  The foam wind screen there was $19.99 but I got both of them at Sweetwater because I’d already saved $20 and more importantly Sweetwater gave me free shipping, where Amazon wanted to charge at least $5 (to ship foam) so the foam windscreen was really the same price in both places.

The Sweetwater Call

The trick to this whole thing was that on Sweetwater they used their own internal model numbers and not the Rode model numbers.  Rode has a model number of WS2 for the foam screen and Sweetwater calls the same thing the NTWS.  So even after I knew what I needed, I could tell if Sweetwater ‘really’ had the right thing..  So I had to call them to confirm and everything was cool after that.

Sitting by the Lake Watching Izea PPC Demonstration

100_1302I’m sitting by the lake watching Ted Murphy give a demonstration of the new SocialSpark PPC advertising campaign tools.

I’m learning quite a bit about the new system.  Some of you may know that I have been involved in some of the early testing of the PPC system from a blogger/deployment perspective.  I’ve written a fairly detailed article about SocialSpark PPC advertising already.

Today, I’m filling in some of my questions about the system, which I will write up in an update article on Top10Tech.com.

Mobile Posts Gone Wrong – When Texting Spoils Your Blog

imageThe other night, I was watching a TechSmith screencast on my laptop while I was putting away dishes from the dishwasher.  I thought to myself that this was a kind of a unique multitasking  . . . task.  So I whipped out my trusty Nokia cell phone (nice little, emphasis little phone, but not terribly capable in the high tech area) and I snapped a picture.

I sent it into Utterli, which I use for my mobile posting and didn’t realize that I had been hit by the texting gremlin which incorrectly translated Putting into Ruthoi.

I have no idea what Ruthoi means, but it sure doesn’t mean ‘Putting’ and it sure was not very predictive.  I have no idea why, but now that my Nokia phone is about 9 months old, it doesn’t work as well as it did when I first got it.

6 months ago it barely worked at all.  It was locking up and crash and all sorts of things.  I called TMobile, and they told me to delete all the messages in my inbox and outbox.

Apparently this helps to empty the phone memory and the phone can work better afterwards.

Meet Boscho My New Son

100_1296 But that doesn’t explain the fact that my phone doesn’t seem to remember how to spell anymore.  My son’s name is Corbin and about 2 months ago my phone forgot how to spell Corbin and now spells Corbin as Boscho.   Originally, I thought this was amusing.

If you read this blog, you know I have a weird sense of humor.

This month it started spelling my daughter’s name as ‘Woe’.  Her real name is Zoe.

Now the Ruthoi error must have been partly my fault because there are not enough letters in the word to even become ‘Putting’.  But still it was kind of my wake up call that my phone isn’t cutting the mustard.

Now, cell phones in recent years (since my t-mobile Palm treo 600 died more than a year ago) have been the bane of my existence.  My Palm Treo 700P through Verizon almost ended me.  This little Nokia on Tmobile worked great the first 5 months and then started turning into a monster.

I do NOT do business with at&t because they stole $1,000 from me in 2000 and I’ll never go back to a company that slams people into higher rate plans without notification even.  So that means that I will never own an iPhone because Apple can’t get their act together enough to do business with other carriers, and I also don’t do unlocked phones.

So that all means I have to find a good alternative.  I like the look of the Palm Pre, but I’m not exactly crazy enough to go set up an account with Sprint that may have a reputation that is even worse than at&t!
